Another day, another study totally contradicting what scientists were saying a couple of years ago.
According to researchers at Italy's University of Bologna, allowing plus-size models to walk the runway and appear in magazines will encourage obesity amongst women. Banning size zero models would alter our perception of the standard for beauty, and increase unhealthy eating habits.
Getting rid of dangerously skinny models and allowing larger models to participate in high fashion events could help women with eating disorders, they concede, but it would be detrimental to the majority of women.
Dr. Davide Dragone and Dr. Luca Savorelli said in a statement: "To promote chubby fashion models when obesity is one of the major problems of industrialised countries seems to be a paradox."
They believe that in changing the standard weight and image for women, many would no longer work hard to keep fit. And in changing the standard within the fashion world, it would have a snowball effect through other mediums, such as TV advertising and films.
Ultimately they're saying that if we let women who wear anything larger than a size zero be models, we're endangering women all over the world, because they'll no longer feel ugly enough to work out constantly, and develop eating disorders.
