Former NFL safety Dave Duerson killed himself and left his brain to science. And the NFL is left with a growing reputation management problem.

There is a perception that getting your skull smashed thousands of times during a football career is creating massive brain damage and making football players either die very young or kill themselves. Increasingly the science seems to back this up.

At some point, someone at the NFL is going to have to wise up and say to owners and the league "either we change helmets and create safer work environments for our players or the federal government steps in, forces us to play games with airbags strapped onto players and we rename yourself the national touch football league."
